## What this funds

The United States is in a battle for global leadership in the critical and emerging technologies (CETs) that will drive decades of national and economic security and prosperity. As the nation's premier laboratory with the mission to promote U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness, NIST is poised to work with industry at every step to support U.S. manufacturing and technological capacity in CETs, including artificial intelligence (AI), quantum information science and technology (QIST), and biotechnology and biomanufacturing. These areas hold promise to transform U.S. manufacturing, communications, healthcare, transportation, and beyond. NIST conducts world-class research to drive discoveries and advance the measurement science and standards in CETs. While technological innovations will contribute to the U.S. economy and quality of life, they have many associated barriers and challenges in areas like interoperability, security, usability, and performance. NIST uniquely responds to these challenges by engaging with government and industry stakeholders to develop the measurement science solutions, standards, prototypes, and guidelines essential for technology adoption. Throughout its history, NIST has provided new industries with foundational measurement tools to accelerate innovation, adoption, and impact of CETs, including: Artificial Intelligence: NIST's AI portfolio is driving consistency in the measurement of AI system performance, reliability, and security to solidify American dominance in AI innovation, technology leadership, economic competitiveness, and national security. Quantum Information Science and Technology: NIST's advances in quantum science and quantum measurement technologies are catalyzing the growth of U.S. businesses and services, strengthening the domestic quantum industry. Building on this foundation, NIST conducts research and development in quantum computing, sensing, and networking that addresses critical national needs while helping train a robust U.S. quantum workforce. Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing: NIST advances measurement science and standards to accelerate the design, development, and manufacturing of innovative biotechnology products, such as high-value biopharmaceuticals, specialty chemicals, and biomaterials, including through new classes of reference materials and the application of AI to biotechnology and biomanufacturing applications.
