What this funds

NIST will continue to focus on the impact of hazards on buildings and communities and on post-disaster studies to help improve standards, codes, and practices for buildings and infrastructure systems. NIST will continue to provide advancements in measurement science to address natural economic, and physical systems. It includes the development of measurement science to assess the performance of engineered materials from chronic and episodic hazards on the built environment. NIST provides performance-based approaches, and science-based codes and standards, for Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) fire hazard mitigation through hardening structures, parcels, and communities to reduce losses in WUI fires. NIST will continue to assess building and infrastructure performance and emergency response and evacuation procedures in the wake of disaster and failure events that resulted in, or had the potential for, substantial loss of life, and develop forward-looking building codes, standards and guidelines for resilient buildings to provide the Nation's primary defense against hazard events and future weather-related effects. To ensure that the United States continues to lead in resilience and fire research, NIST will a) continue to collaborate directly with private and public sector stakeholders; b) support the private sector-led international standards ecosystem; c) create a work environment that fosters excellence in science and safety; and d) ensure NIST research, services, and products meet the needs of the American public so that the benefits of science and technology will reach every organization and sector of the economy. National Institute of Standards and Technology Scientific and Technical Research and Services Budget Program: Resilience and Fire Research Project Change: Resilience and Fire Research Reduction Resilience and Fire Research Reduction (-$9.862 million, 0 FTE / 0 Positions) - The FY 2027 President's Budget request for Resilience and Fire Research is $42.2 million, which is an 18.9% reduction from base levels - and is consistent with the Administration's goals to enable agencies to fulfill their statutory responsibilities in the most cost-effective manner possible and to allow NIST to invest in core measurement science efforts that align with mission priorities in critical and emerging technologies. The proposed reductions in the Resilience and Fire Research budget program include across the board reductions from labor and non-labor contracts, research and development contracts, grants, and supplies and equipment., as well as targeted programmatic streamlining efforts to align staffing levels with mission priorities. NIST will prioritize efforts to improve building codes and standards for more resilient infrastructure against natural disasters, as well as research on Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) fire hazard mitigation; however, NIST will reduce the overall capacity for resilience and fire-related research programs.
