What this funds

The Checkpoint Automation (CPAM) initiative aims to leverage Open Architecture (OA) to establish a connected transportation security system of systems, in which state-of-the-art solutions are quickly adopted to address emerging threats and enable a dynamic screening environment. The FY 2027 Budget includes $6.0M to support the development and operationalization of OA concepts, enabling TSA to adopt industry innovations from any potential partner rapidly and improve overall operational efficiency and customer experience. The CPAM initiative focuses on establishing a connected and interoperable transportation security system through the adoption of OA. This design approach ensures that components like software and hardware are standards-based and interoperable to allow any vendor to create improved components (e.g., new detection algorithms and common user interfaces). CPAM includes the development and operationalization of standards and enabling solutions such as the Digital Imaging and Communications in Security (DICOS) data format, the Open Platform Software Library (OPSL) interfaces and communication protocols, and the Threat Recognition System (TRS) computing platform. These components work together to create a vendor-neutral environment that supports rapid innovation across an expanded industry base and enhances TSA's ability to address emerging threats efficiently.
