Risk Management R&D - PPA Technical Forensics This project enhances the U.S. Government's ability to assess, analyze, and attribute pre- and post-detonation nuclear material, informing critical national security decisions. The National Nuclear Forensics Expertise Development Program (NNFEDP) is a critical component to maintain a robust U.S. nuclear forensics capability by addressing the declining pipeline of qualified experts. Established in the Homeland Security Act of 2002 (P.L. 107-296) as amended by both the Nuclear Forensics and Attribution Act (NFAA) (P.L.111-140) and the CWMD Act of 2018 (P.L. 115-387), DHS is directed to establish a National Nuclear Forensics Expertise Development Program, which is devoted to developing and maintaining a vibrant and enduring academic pathway from undergraduate to post-doctorate study in nuclear and geochemical materials science, and analytical chemistry. The NNFEDP is led by The National Technical Nuclear Forensics Center. DHS CISA proposes to meet this objective by implementing the NNFEDP in close coordination with other Departments and Agencies to ensure a robust academic pathway needed to sustain a viable nuclear forensics workforce; and by sponsoring post-doctoral fellowships, nuclear forensics research awards to universities, and Federal expertise development opportunities.
