What the FY2027 request buys

Verbatim from the R-2A exhibit for project 613002 of PE 0601102F. This is the budget justification's own description of work that has not happened yet — the one thing no other level of the budget carries.

FY2027 planned work

- Continue investigating multifunctional materials and structures composed of different classes of materials, both organic and inorganic, that can adapt to environmental constraints or mission requirements. - Continue to explore hierarchically-designed materials, microsystems, and structures to achieve dynamically functional and controlled material properties enabling predictable and adaptable performance characteristics.

FY2026 to FY2027 change

FY 2027 decreased compared to FY 2026 by $2.739 million due to decreased emphasis on Complex Materials and Structures. This reduction reflects programmatic adjustments to the DAF Science and Technology portfolio for strategic realignment to optimize core research areas and improve resource efficiency. This will result in approximately 11 fewer grants awarded in Complex Materials and Structures.

Before the request year

FY2026: the year under way

Prior-year accomplishments and current-year plans from the same exhibit. Context for the FY2027 plan, not a series — an activity partitions its project exactly in the request year, but can under-cover it in earlier years.

FY2026 plans — current year

- Investigate multifunctional materials and structures composed of different classes of materials, both organic and inorganic, that can adapt to environmental constraints or mission requirements. - Explore complex materials, microsystems, and structures that incorporate hierarchical design and functionality from the nanoscale through the mesoscale, ultimately leading to controlled, well-understood material or structural behavior capable of dynamic functionality and/or performance characteristics to enhance mission versatility.

Three years, and no five-year plan

An R-2A activity publishes the prior year, the current year and the budget year. The FYDP outyears exist at project and program-element level and are deliberately absent here rather than inferred. Estimate types are colored and never summed into one figure.

This activity is 37% of project 613002's FY2027 request and 10% of PE 0601102F's. In the request year the activities under a project sum to it exactly; in the current year they under-cover it in about 9% of cases, so an activity's delta can legitimately exceed its parent's and the two must not be compared row to row.
