## What project EMR-03 buys

The Materials Sciences project provides the fundamental research that underpins the design, development, assembly, and optimization of advanced materials, devices, and systems for DoW applications in areas such as design and simulation of novel materials and structures, energetics, complex hybrid systems, and advanced metrology. Prior to FY 2026, efforts in this Project were funded in PE 0601101E, Project MS-01.

### Materials Sciences Studies and Concepts

- Explore potential of complex optimized protocols to produce currently unattainable material properties and desired performance limits. - Refine isotope and trace element analysis capabilities and demonstrate robust and universal analysis capabilities with (sub)-ppm sensitivities. - Develop aerosol materials with high acoustic impedance…

### Fundamental Limits

- Demonstrate improved radioisotope yield in generating useful daughter products faster than natural decay processes and show a path to producing practical quantities of radioisotopes. - Complete solid-state reaction rate amplification factor analysis modeling and testing. - Demonstrate ~1000X improvement in solid-state reaction rates.

### Molecular Systems and Materials Assembly

**FY2026 to FY2027 change.** The FY 2027 decrease reflects program completion.

**FY2026 plans — current year.** - Develop and assess the capability of an integrated system to produce sufficient microbial biomass powder for 14 warfighters in one day from air, water, electricity, and microbes. - Determine that the microbial biomass powder meets DoW Nutritional Standards for Operational Rations (NSOR) requirement and meets DoW safety and stability standards. - Assess novel methods for modeling electrochemical interfaces, such as in batteries, to improve system lifetime performance.
