# BioElectronics to Sense and Treat (BEST)

**R-2A activity** of project WP-02 — BIOMEDICAL TECHNOLOGY
**Program element:** 0602024E — Warfighting Performance
**Component:** Defense-Wide · **Budget Activity:** 2

## Summary

This activity requests $14.2M in FY2027, 7.5% of project WP-02, down 15% on FY2026. The R-2A exhibit describes it across FY2026–FY2027, including what the FY2027 money is planned to buy.

## What the FY2027 request buys

**FY2027 planned work.** - Demonstrate accuracy in identifying single and mixed groups of microorganisms in vitro. - Demonstrate efficacy for at least one novel wound infection treatment approach in vitro. - Determine the appropriate regulatory pathway(s) for the wound infection sensing and treatment devices with the Food and Drug Administration. - Finalize the engineering designs or schematics for the wound infection sensing and treatment devices.

**FY2026 to FY2027 change.** The FY 2027 decrease reflects a shift in focus from early technology development and in vitro testing to in vivo validation.

## Before the request year

**FY2026 plans — current year.** - Finalize the characterization of microorganisms present in tissue samples from infected wounds. - Continue optimization and improvement of algorithms to accurately predict the healing outcome of individual wounds. - Start sensor development to identify and characterize microorganisms within wounds in real time. - Initiate the development of an electronic platform to produce, dispense, or provide antimicrobial therapeutics. - Initiate the development of approaches to determine the appropriate treatments for different types of infections.

## Funding

| Fiscal Year | Estimate Type | Amount ($M) |
|---|---|---|
| FY2026 | Enacted | 16.7 |
| FY2027 | Request | 14.2 |

> Prior, current and budget year only — an R-2A activity carries no five-year plan. It sums exactly into its project in the request year and not necessarily in any other.
