What the FY2027 request buys

Verbatim from the R-2A exhibit for project 3001 of PE 0602131M. This is the budget justification's own description of work that has not happened yet — the one thing no other level of the budget carries.

FY2027 planned work

Continue: - Research efforts into advanced software frameworks that support human decision making and planning activities at the tactical and operational levels during high tempo operations by integrating organic sensor data, incorporating faster than real-time military simulation, and conducting Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) analysis to inform command decision making by inferring adversarial intent, plans, and tactics and providing reactive and adaptive planning and recommendations. - Research to provide Augmented Reality (AR) Heads-up Display (HUD) interfaces, multi-modal input methods, and communication aides to significantly improve Marines' situational awareness and speed the kill chain for ground forces / infantry employment of fires activities. - The development of frameworks for intelligent signal processing resource allocation management on individual expeditionary platforms in real time. - Research to develop methods for the autonomous dispersing, monitoring and retrieval of large numbers of small, unmanned vehicles capable of providing visual, Radio Frequency (RF), and acoustic data for enhanced situational understanding in small unit (company and below) tactical operations. Complete: - The demonstration of dynamic range compression filters that enable wideband, high sensitivity reception to continue in the presence of uncooperative loud signals. Initiate: - Research to develop subsystem enhancements for ultra-wideband antennas, sensors, and photonic processing for passive detection of threats.

FY2026 to FY2027 change

The increase in funding from FY 2026 to FY 2027 is due to the increased investments in research to prioritize new passive sensing technologies without radio frequency emissions.

Before the request year

FY2026: the year under way

Prior-year accomplishments and current-year plans from the same exhibit. Context for the FY2027 plan, not a series — an activity partitions its project exactly in the request year, but can under-cover it in earlier years.

FY2026 plans — current year

- Continue research efforts into advanced software frameworks that support human decision making at the tactical level during high tempo operations by integrating organic sensor data, incorporating faster than real-time military simulation, and conducting Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) analysis to inform command decision making by inferring adversarial intent, plans, and tactics and providing reactive and adaptive planning and recommendations. - Continue research to provide augmented reality (AR) interfaces, multi-modal input methods, and communication aides to significantly improve Marines' situational awareness and speed the kill chain. - Continue the development of frameworks for intelligent signal processing resource allocation management on individual expeditionary platforms in real time. - Continue the development of dynamic range compression filters that enable wideband, high sensitivity reception to continue in the presence of uncooperative loud signals. - Initiate research to develop methods for the autonomous dispersing, monitoring and retrieval of large numbers small unmanned vehicles capable of providing visual, Radio Frequency (RF), and acoustic data for enhanced situational understanding in small unit (company and below) tactical operations.

Three years, and no five-year plan

An R-2A activity publishes the prior year, the current year and the budget year. The FYDP outyears exist at project and program-element level and are deliberately absent here rather than inferred. Estimate types are colored and never summed into one figure.

This activity is 20% of project 3001's FY2027 request and 18% of PE 0602131M's. In the request year the activities under a project sum to it exactly; in the current year they under-cover it in about 9% of cases, so an activity's delta can legitimately exceed its parent's and the two must not be compared row to row.
