What the FY2027 request buys
Verbatim from the R-2A exhibit for project DN6 of PE 0602141A. This is the budget justification's own description of work that has not happened yet — the one thing no other level of the budget carries.
Will determine optimal formulation ingredients to maximize Gurney energy and long-term survivability for CL-20 containing warhead formulations; refine propellant formulation ingredients and processing conditions to deliver increased range for gun-launched munitions; explore materials and processing methods for application of high durability metallic coatings; create a framework for material performance optimization in relevant environments; perform characterization and analyses on advanced propulsion materials created through improved processing methodologies; investigate performance of integrated electronic devices in relevant environments; develop models to optimize lethality of metallic materials based on composition and processing; build exemplar use cases for multifunctional architectures with acquisition and concept developers; develop and mature novel processes and technologies to optimize munition design to meet different Warfighter requirements; validate initial designs in small-scale laboratory experiments.
This is not a new start effort. FY 2027 funding increase reflects the consolidation of other ongoing efforts within this project from Dense Energetic Materials Science, Mechanisms, Materials, and Processing for Lethality, and Distributed, Dense, Multifunctional Architectures for Munitions to support the creation of Dense Energetic Materials Science and Multifunctional Munitions.
Three years, and no five-year plan
An R-2A activity publishes the prior year, the current year and the budget year. The FYDP outyears exist at project and program-element level and are deliberately absent here rather than inferred. Estimate types are colored and never summed into one figure.
| Fiscal Year | Estimate Type | Amount ($M) |
|---|---|---|
| FY2027 | Request | 14.7 |
This activity is 71% of project DN6's FY2027 request and 6.3% of PE 0602141A's. In the request year the activities under a project sum to it exactly; in the current year they under-cover it in about 9% of cases, so an activity's delta can legitimately exceed its parent's and the two must not be compared row to row.
