What the FY2027 request buys
Verbatim from the R-2A exhibit for project BG6 of PE 0602145A. This is the budget justification's own description of work that has not happened yet — the one thing no other level of the budget carries.
Will investigate automated armor design methodology, machine learning tools, and computational methods for optimizing protection against a specific threat of interest against various armor technologies; expand Armor database and machine learning knowledge products; devise and refine theory for scaling behavior in thick metal plates; conduct experiments at key loading rates and temperatures relative to typical Army environments to populate key material and mechanical parameters for constitutive models used for high-rate behavior of metals, glasses, composites, and explosives; implement material models and parameters, and other code enhancements for for installation on DoW High Performance Computing (HPC) machines; investigate the portability of advanced explosive initiation models into computational codes of interest; investigate novel, nontraditional dual-purpose armor such as battery armor; investigate diagnostics of directed energy influences for lethality and protection; explore multispectral sensors and diagnostic techniques with and without laser illumination for solving knowledge gaps in terminal ballistic physics and discovery of new phenomena; conduct analysis and experimentation of multi-purpose munitions with combined penetration, blast effects, and other mechanisms for lethality and protection exploitation; develop fast-running models to describe lethality of multipurpose munitions; optimize shock-mitigating materials for enhanced control of wave propagation during explosive events.
This is not a new start. Funding was realigned from Program Element (PE) 0602144A (Ground Technology) / Project CG7 (Ground Protection Concepts and Technologies) to support the creation of Terminal Effects Mechanisms in FY 2027.
Three years, and no five-year plan
An R-2A activity publishes the prior year, the current year and the budget year. The FYDP outyears exist at project and program-element level and are deliberately absent here rather than inferred. Estimate types are colored and never summed into one figure.
| Fiscal Year | Estimate Type | Amount ($M) |
|---|---|---|
| FY2027 | Request | 11.1 |
This activity is 29% of project BG6's FY2027 request and 16% of PE 0602145A's. In the request year the activities under a project sum to it exactly; in the current year they under-cover it in about 9% of cases, so an activity's delta can legitimately exceed its parent's and the two must not be compared row to row.
9 activities in project BG6
Every R-2A line of this project, largest FY2027 request first. Linked where the activity has enough of its own narrative to carry a page; the rest are shown in full on the project page.
