## Summary

This activity requests $25.2M in FY2027, 61% of project 627757, up 4.5% on FY2026. The R-2A exhibit describes it across FY2026–FY2027, including what the FY2027 money is planned to buy.

## What the FY2027 request buys

**FY2027 planned work.** -Continue advancing dose-response models by incorporating experimental findings on high-pulse-energy injury and investigating machine learning techniques to expand applicability across parameter spaces. -Continue advancing 3-dimensional digital anatomical models by validating adaptive meshing techniques, which optimize computational speed while retaining the ability to evaluate damage in anatomical regions of interest. -Continue maturing HPC approaches by conducting pilot efforts to integrate prior-year modeling outcomes into broader Department of War end-to-end modeling environments. -Continue updating the dose-response library by transitioning data on high-energy laser skin injury severity and incorporating new endpoints for eye damage from experimental data. -Complete a study on extending modeling approaches by maturing machine learning surrogates and incorporating them into components for predicting biological outcomes in engagement-level simulations. -Complete the development of virtual reality models by incorporating experimental findings on color shifts from protective devices and developing features to portray visual obscurations realistically for wargaming.

**FY2026 to FY2027 change.** FY 2027 increased compared to FY 2026 by $1.086 million due to minor programmatic adjustments to the DAF Science and Technology portfolio.

## Before the request year

**FY2026 plans — current year.** -Continue advancing dose-response models to incorporate injury severity as a function of directed energy weapon parameters and deliver validated software components for integration into analysis and weaponeering products. -Continue advancing 3-dimensional digital anatomical models by increasing resolution and incorporating adaptive meshing to efficiently evaluate damage from both heat and stress wave mechanisms. -Continue maturing high-performance computing (HPC) approaches to quantify uncertainty in multi-physics bioeffect simulations and integrate directed energy injury endpoints into Department of War HPC tool suites. -Continue extending modeling approaches by using physics-informed machine learning to surrogate complex physics-level simulations for digital human representation throughout analyses. -Complete the Virtual Reality component for vision effects (glare/dazzle) by transitioning laser dazzle simulations for integration into experimental wargames and training products. -Commence updates to the dose-response library based on new scientific data that parameterizes skin injury severity from emerging directed energy systems.

| FY2026 | Enacted | 24.1 |
| FY2027 | Request | 25.2 |

> Prior, current and budget year only — an R-2A activity carries no five-year plan. It sums exactly into its project in the request year and not necessarily in any other.
