## Summary

This activity requests $15.8M in FY2027, 26% of project 0000, down 18% on FY2026. The R-2A exhibit describes it across FY2026–FY2027, including what the FY2027 money is planned to buy.

## What the FY2027 request buys

**FY2027 planned work.** Materials: - Continue advanced materials, processes and capabilities. - Continue ongoing research efforts to improve affordability and reliability of piezoelectric transduction materials. The focus will be on Acoustic Transduction Materials Technology to reduce size, weight, and power (SWaP) and improve sensitivity of sensors and SONAR. - Continue efforts focused on the development of high thermal conductivity materials for high power electronic device application to improve performance. - Continue research to pursue commercially viable processing for nano-ceramics. The focus will be on nano-ceramics aimed at improved resilience of naval systems and platforms and capabilities for producing novel, high performance components. - Continue applied research efforts in matrix materials and nano/micro-scale embedded structures useful for controlling platform signatures as well as their manufacturability in quantity. - Continue research to develop Advanced and Alternative Structural Alloys and Composites, as well as their associated Joining and Repair technologies. - Continue work on functional polymeric composites for shipboard fire safety. - Initiate efforts in multifunctional materials technology development including, Adaptive Multifunctional Surfaces, Multi-functional Battery Materials, Flexible Thermoelectric Coolers, Quantum Sensing Material Design. Manufacturing Technology, includes the following efforts: - Continue applied research to investigate computational tools for additive manufacturing materials and processes. - Continue investments in hybrid laser arc welding and high temperature polymeric composites. - Continue investments in electronics/electro-optics and biomanufacturing. - Continue efforts to investigate new computational tools for dynamic response Integrated Manufacturing and Sustainment includes the following efforts: -Continue applied research to investigate corrosion control technologies through investigation of corrosion inhibitor performance for coatings and corrosion mechanisms of compositionally complex alloys (CCA) and additive manufactured materials. - Continue efforts for low/no maintenance resiliency for unmanned systems - Initiate efforts for digital tools for sustainment Power & Energy Technologies, includes the following efforts: - Complete assessment of additive materials and long-term hot corrosion with burner systems in a Navy environment. - Continue Scale-up and Processing of New High Temperature Dielectrics for High Energy Density Capacitors - Continue research aimed at advancing materials, processes and capabilities necessary for improving resilience of expeditionary water supply. - Continue superconducting materials applied research aimed at increasing critical temperature performance Operational Endurance Applied Research, includes the following efforts: - Complete research aimed at advancing materials, processes and capabilities necessary for mitigating climate risk to expeditionary water supply. Resilient Naval System Technologies (formerly Naval Engineering), includes the following efforts: -Continue applied research efforts in support of advanced naval platform materials refining and concentrating efforts on advanced structural materials that improve Platform Survivability and Functionality. - Continue applied research in support of advanced materials aimed at improving naval platform susceptibility against detection and classification. -Continue applied research efforts in support of near platform chemical physics and associated technologies to improve system performance by reducing in-situ chemical reactions with naval materials.

**FY2026 to FY2027 change.** The FY 2026 to FY 2027 decrease in funding is due to completion of applied research efforts for development of naval materials in support of naval power systems, including efforts associated with attributable fuel cells.
