FY2027 Request
$10.8M
◆ New start in FY2027
HitchAI read

This activity requests $10.8M in FY2027, 7.3% of project MK4 — a new start with no prior-year and no current-year money. The R-2A exhibit describes it across FY2027, including what the FY2027 money is planned to buy.

New start

This activity requests $10.8M in FY2027 with no prior-year and no current-year funding. There is no incumbent line to compare it with — it did not exist before this President's Budget.

What the FY2027 request buys

Verbatim from the R-2A exhibit for project MK4 of PE 0602787A. This is the budget justification's own description of work that has not happened yet — the one thing no other level of the budget carries.

FY2027 planned work

Continued evaluation of translational countermeasures resulting in a go/no go decision supporting advance research to mitigate medical risk and augment performance for Soldier operations in extreme environments. Identify and assess novel interventions to optimize hydration in extreme heat and increase blood oxygen levels at extreme altitude to help sustain Warfighter performance and ensure mission success. Initiate pilot study to inform feasibility of implementing recommendations to reduce MSKI during Initial Military Training, effort will reduce the risk for future with follow-on randomized controlled trial evaluating the implementation of MSKI reduction recommendations in larger Combat Arms population. Continued evaluation of modifiable readiness, psychological, and physiological performance factors that can be targeted for interventions to improve cognitive and physical performance in the training and operational environment. Investigate inertial induced brain injury risk metrics to mitigate brain injury in military operational environments that generate inertial forces Determine effectiveness of a) transcranial ultrasound stimulation on boosting daytime sleep and aviator performance, and b) transcranial ultrasound stimulation in maintaining vigilance during UAS missions.

FY2026 to FY2027 change

Funding increase reflects realignment and consolidation within this project from: Operational Risk Planning Tools for Battlefield Environmental Threats; Leader Decision Aid to Manage Blast Head Injury in All Settings; Physical Fitness Standards to Prevent Musculoskeletal Injuries; Leader Tools to Reduce Musculoskeletal Injury In All Settings; Biomedical Performance Enhancement; Expeditionary Force Nutrition to Improve Performance. Funding will continue characterization of cold weather physiology to inform frostbite prevention, energy fueling optimization in extreme environments, and MSKI prevention strategies.

Three years, and no five-year plan

An R-2A activity publishes the prior year, the current year and the budget year. The FYDP outyears exist at project and program-element level and are deliberately absent here rather than inferred. Estimate types are colored and never summed into one figure.

This activity is 7.3% of project MK4's FY2027 request and 7.3% of PE 0602787A's. In the request year the activities under a project sum to it exactly; in the current year they under-cover it in about 9% of cases, so an activity's delta can legitimately exceed its parent's and the two must not be compared row to row.
