What the FY2027 request buys

Verbatim from the R-2A exhibit for project 1050 of PE 0603680N. This is the budget justification's own description of work that has not happened yet — the one thing no other level of the budget carries.

FY2027 planned work

- Complete metals processing and fabrication projects in support of key platforms in areas such as robotic and automation, inspection technologies, metal forming, process flow optimization, fabrication mobility/agility, surface preparation, and machine learning. - Continue to develop and transition metals processing and fabrication manufacturing technology improvements that result in expanded through-put, affordability, and enhanced capability for key platforms: VCS/CLB, DDG 51, CVN 78, and F-35. - Initiate metals processing and fabrication projects in support of key platforms in areas such as robotics and automation, shipboard drilling, and advanced welding techniques. - Continue metals processing and fabrication projects in support of key platforms in areas such as robotics and automation, and inspection technologies.

FY2026 to FY2027 change

There is no significant funding change between FY2026 and FY2027.

Before the request year

FY2026: the year under way

Prior-year accomplishments and current-year plans from the same exhibit. Context for the FY2027 plan, not a series — an activity partitions its project exactly in the request year, but can under-cover it in earlier years.

FY2026 plans — current year

- Complete metals processing and fabrication projects in support of key platforms in areas such as inspection technologies, robotics and automation, advanced welding technologies, and joining processes. - Complete Repair Technology (RepTech) thrust to develop, optimize, and transition repair technologies for key naval platforms at depots and logistics centers. At the project level, initiate approximately 3 projects in sustainment technology once FY26 planning is complete. - Continue to develop and transition metals processing and fabrication manufacturing technology improvements that result in expanded through-put, affordability, and enhanced capability for key platforms: VCS/CLB, DDG 51, CVN 78, F-35, and FFG 62. - Continue metals processing and fabrication projects in support of key platforms in areas such as surface preparation, shipboard structural design, machine learning, fabrication mobility/agility, process flow optimization, and metal forming. - Initiate metals processing and fabrication projects in support of key platforms in areas such as robotics and automation, advanced metallic materials, remote welding, and advanced welding techniques.

Three years, and no five-year plan

An R-2A activity publishes the prior year, the current year and the budget year. The FYDP outyears exist at project and program-element level and are deliberately absent here rather than inferred. Estimate types are colored and never summed into one figure.

This activity is 15% of project 1050's FY2027 request and 15% of PE 0603680N's. In the request year the activities under a project sum to it exactly; in the current year they under-cover it in about 9% of cases, so an activity's delta can legitimately exceed its parent's and the two must not be compared row to row.
