## What project MD09 buys

Aegis Based Defense continues the development of a Sea-Based BMD capability in support of the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) mission to protect the homeland, deployed forces, friends and allies from ballistic missile threats of all ranges and in all stages of flight. - Aegis BMD Technology Design and Insertion: Aegis BMD Technology Design and Insertion enable cross-baseline specification management and capability assessments to ensure consistent application of technical standards, processes, and procedures across the Aegis BMD program. Aegis BMD specific efforts include systems engineering and architecture (process and execution); Modeling and Simulation (M&S); Ship integration; and Quality, safety, and mission assurance. - Aegis BL (BMD) Development Efforts: (1) Aegis BMD 4.X Development: Aegis BL 5.4.1 (BMD 4.2) is a joint effort with the U.S. Navy that refurbishes existing ship Army Navy/Transportable Radar Surveillance and Control-1 (AN/SPY-1) radar arrays with the installation of antenna Low Noise Amplifiers (LNAs). As a result of cost growth and schedule delay, MDA and Navy jointly realigned the LNA program to include hardware and software upgrades with no LNA hardware procurements. The restructured program referred to as BMD 4.1.3, spiral capability for the non-LNA upgrades that began in FY 2024 to include Sea Based Terminal Increment (SBT) 2 Capability Upgrade, Hypersonic Tracking and Reporting, Mission Planner Console update, and Threat Database re-architecture. This capability began delivering to 21 Flight I/II Guided Missile Destroyer (DDG) ships in FY 2025. (2) Aegis BMD 5.X Development: Aegis BL 9 (BMD 5.1.5 and 5.2 (previously BMD 5.1.6)) software spiral aligns with U.S. Navy Aegis BL 9 Capability Package (CP) 2024 and Aegis BL 9.C3. The software spiral provides enhanced detection, track, report, and defeat capabilities of additional medium, intermediate, and long-range threats with increasingly complex engagement scenes and increased raid sizes. Through a series of unique Capability Insertion Packages, BMD 5.X capability spirals provide continuous software updates to the original BMD 5.1.0 5 architecture to incorporate emerging Missile Defense System capabilities, Warfighter improvements, SM-3 software updates, PAC-3 missile integration with system performance enhancements and improved Weapon System performance necessary to pace the threat.
