The project's core innovation lies in the direct conversion of RF energy to photons, a critical step that dramatically simplifies signal routing and reduces the antenna's overall size. This new RF/photonic interconnect will enable more than 600 phased array elements to establish and maintain a crucial X-Band communication link. (CA56) The details of Program Element 0604280N, Project CA56 for Modern HF Communications Relay Stations are classified SECRET//NOFORN and are submitted annually to Congress in the classified budget justification books. (CA57) The development of Network Tactical Common Data Link (NTCDL) - Phased Array Antenna Qualification will produce a fully integrated and modernized prototype configuration that serves as a foundational pathfinder for a future NTCDL system. This prototype will drive down costs for future procurements, and enable more streamlined, lower-cost shipboard installations, supporting scalable NTCDL evolution with improved long-term affordability.
