FY2027 planned work

Will assess performance of standardized cylindrical energy storage cells produced with industry partner at extreme low temperature (-20 deg C to -60 deg C) as well as effects on ambient and elevated temperatures (up to 60 deg C) performance and stability; explore integration of low temperature capable cells into experimental battery packs and UAS; assess impacts of advanced low temperature energy storage cells on experimental battery packs and UAS platforms; create new energy storage materials and electrolytes to enhance cell charging capabilities at extreme low temperatures; explore power electronics to enable advanced and faster battery charging protocols; design and develop salt, additive, and solvent compositions that promote cycle stability in multivalent and beyond-Lithium energy storage; explore and integrate high-capacity cathode materials for beyond-Lithium energy storage; mature alloy and host anode materials for beyond-Lithium energy storage; validate beyond-Lithium energy storage can exceed specific energy of current Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) based Lithium-ion battery cells with industry partners; assess energy density, rate performance, and cycle life of experimental cells employing safe electrolyte and cell engineering approaches; explore integration of protected and unprotected silicon materials as well as role of size, structure, binder, oxide content, and graphite content on energy storage cell performance; investigate role of partial depth of discharge on fast charge capabilities of high-capacity anode materials.

FY2026 to FY2027 change

Funding increase supports additional research in the areas of new battery materials and electrolytes to enhance cell charging capabilities at extreme low temperatures, high-capacity cathode materials for beyond-Lithium battery chemistries, power electronics to enable advanced and faster battery charging protocols, and the integration of low temperature capable battery cells into experimental battery packs and Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS).
