What the FY2027 request buys

Verbatim from the R-2A exhibit for project 622403 of PE 0602203F. This is the budget justification's own description of work that has not happened yet — the one thing no other level of the budget carries.

FY2027 planned work

Complete development of advanced power and thermal capabilities. Activities include: -Thermal architecture trade studies and analysis toolset development Continue the development of power, thermal management and controls technologies for modular electrified aircraft. Activities include -Component maturation and systems analysis for power generation, electrical distribution, and thermal architectures Commence the development of power generation and thermal management for high-speed systems. Activities include: -Laboratory demonstrations and model verification of super-critical CO2 thermal and power cycles, evaluation of supercritical fuels and analysis of waste heat-electrical power

FY2026 to FY2027 change

FY 2027 decreased compared to FY 2026 by $8.099 million due to programmatic adjustments to the DAF Science and Technology portfolio. This reduction reflects a strategic realignment to optimize core research areas and improve resource efficiency

Before the request year

FY2026: the year under way

Prior-year accomplishments and current-year plans from the same exhibit. Context for the FY2027 plan, not a series — an activity partitions its project exactly in the request year, but can under-cover it in earlier years.

FY2026 plans — current year

- Complete testing of subsystems hardware. - Activities include portable power system emulation, transient mission system architectures, distributed electric propulsion architectures, and digital system models for various autonomous collaborative platforms. - Complete medium-scale propulsion, power and thermal system studies and development. - Activities include studies and development of medium scale vapor cycle systems to provide greater thermal capacity to autonomous collaborative platforms. - Continue development of advanced power and thermal capabilities. - Activities include closed-loop power cycles, solid-state thermal-electrical conversion, high lift thermal management, and applied scientific advancements. - Complete development of adaptive, affordable power and thermal technologies. - Activities include maturation of high voltage power generation with integrated energy storage. - Complete development of advanced vehicle energy management capabilities. - Activities include energy aware path planning for autonomous collaborative platforms. - Initiate the development of power, thermal management and controls technologies for modular electrified aircraft. - Activities include assessment of current state of the art in such areas as motors, generators, inverters, and distributed thermal management.

Three years, and no five-year plan

An R-2A activity publishes the prior year, the current year and the budget year. The FYDP outyears exist at project and program-element level and are deliberately absent here rather than inferred. Estimate types are colored and never summed into one figure.

This activity is 39% of project 622403's FY2027 request and 6.6% of PE 0602203F's. In the request year the activities under a project sum to it exactly; in the current year they under-cover it in about 9% of cases, so an activity's delta can legitimately exceed its parent's and the two must not be compared row to row.
