Multi-mission Sensors and Processing for Expanded Maneuver

FY2027 Request
$12.7M
◆ New start in FY2027
HitchAI read

This activity requests $12.7M in FY2027, 92% of project BG1 — a new start with no prior-year and no current-year money. The R-2A exhibit describes it across FY2027, including what the FY2027 money is planned to buy.

New start

This activity requests $12.7M in FY2027 with no prior-year and no current-year funding. There is no incumbent line to compare it with — it did not exist before this President's Budget.

What the FY2027 request buys

Verbatim from the R-2A exhibit for project BG1 of PE 0603462A. This is the budget justification's own description of work that has not happened yet — the one thing no other level of the budget carries.

FY2027 planned work

Will mature and demonstrate day/night electro-optic infrared (EO/IR) aided target detection and recognition (AITDR) threat detection capabilities using imagery collected in both temperate and sub-tropical environments, supporting expanded maneuver of ground platforms against remotely deployed mines; will demonstrate integrated air/ground sensor payloads and processing approaches to detect and geo-locate explosive hazards and obstacles supporting autonomous breaching and expanded maneuver. Demonstrate integration of uncooled long-wavelength infrared (LWIR) thermal sensors with time-correlated algorithms for image stabilization and image smear correction to improve target search performance while on the move for advanced long range, day and night target acquisition; will optimize image processing techniques to exploit advancements in higher speed, smaller pixel pitch uncooled thermal sensors to improve targeting performance; will mature an event based imaging short-wavelength infrared (SWIR) detection sensor system to provide a layered defense approach that integrates wide area surveillance with rapid threat detection and tracking of UAS

FY2026 to FY2027 change

This is not a new start effort. FY 2027 funding increase reflects the consolidation of other ongoing efforts within this project from Advanced Sensors with Embedded Processing and Multi-Mission Payloads. Funding increases reflects additional research to continue the maturation of advanced processing and sensing capabilities to detect explosive hazards and planned initial integration and demonstration of automated driving aids.

Money

Three years, and no five-year plan

An R-2A activity publishes the prior year, the current year and the budget year. The FYDP outyears exist at project and program-element level and are deliberately absent here rather than inferred. Estimate types are colored and never summed into one figure.

This activity is 92% of project BG1's FY2027 request and 11% of PE 0603462A's. In the request year the activities under a project sum to it exactly; in the current year they under-cover it in about 9% of cases, so an activity's delta can legitimately exceed its parent's and the two must not be compared row to row.
