What project AF2 buys
This project directly supports Precision Fires capabilities by developing, maturing and demonstrating next generation Multi-Domain Operations extended range weapon system technology for Precision Strike Missile to increase survivability, penetration, and range in complex Anti Access/Area Denial (A2/AD) and denied environments. This project also includes both the maturation and demonstration of advanced extended range missile technology and autonomous, unmanned launcher technology. The combination of these technologies offers the potential to dramatically increase force projection through increases in range, firepower, and magazine depth. Work in this project complements Program Element (PE) 0602147A (Long Range Precision Fires Technology) / Project AF8 (Affordable Extended Range Precision) and Project AF3 (Extended Range Propulsion Tech). Work in this project is performed by the Aviation & Missile Center (AvMC).
Project AF2 funding, FY2025–FY2031
Prior years are actuals, the budget year is the request, and the outyears are the FYDP plan. Estimate types are colored and never summed into one figure. Projects carry the full five-year plan; the activities inside them stop at the budget year.
| Fiscal Year | Estimate Type | Amount ($M) |
|---|---|---|
| FY2025 | Actual | 89.2 |
| FY2026 | Enacted | 69.0 |
| FY2027 | Request | 62.5 |
| FY2028 | Outyear | 20.5 |
| FY2029 | Outyear | 16.4 |
| FY2030 | Outyear | 21.2 |
| FY2031 | Outyear | 20.8 |
3 accomplishments / planned programs
The R-2A exhibit — the only level of the budget that describes work that has not happened yet. Activities carry the prior, current and budget year only, no five-year plan. 1 of them describes FY2027 work in enough detail to have its own page; the rest are shown here in full. Coverage is partial across the corpus, so count activities, never total them.
FY2027 planned work Will mature and conduct demonstrations of LCCM technologies, to include payload options to increase operational capability, a common booster for ground launch of air launched munitions, and integration concepts for currently fielded Army launchers; conduct design integration reviews with LCCM vendors.
FY2026 to FY2027 change Funding increase reflects initiation of this effort. Funding will be used to conduct demonstrations of LCCM technologies.
Will conduct a comprehensive baseline computational analysis to quantify the lethality of existing warhead designs and to refine and compare with a warhead using a CL-20 based energetic formulation; mature design and begin development of novel warhead technologies and components.
Read the FY2027 plan →FY2026 to FY2027 change Funding decrease reflects completion of LRMF propulsion technology flight demonstrations and transition of technology to PEO MS/PrSM Program of Record. Funding realigned to Program Element (PE) 0603464A (Long Range Precision Fires Advanced Technology) / Project CZ8 (PrSM Modular Payload Advanced Development) for acceleration of Direct Support Fires Technology.
FY2026 plans — current year Will fabricate flight weight hardware and perform a direct connect transition test of the propulsion system to simulate a complete flight transition sequence; will provide technical assessments of multiple vendors concept/solutions supporting a planned Precision Strike Missile Increment 4 rapid prototyping capability competitive fly-off; will integrate high fidelity fly-out, lethality, and survivability models and conduct holistic mission effectiveness analysis for extended range Precision Strike Missile concepts; matures novel warhead with higher energetic density for demonstration in Precision Strike Missile.
FY2025 accomplishments Conduct a series of integrated booster and ramjet demonstrations of propulsion engine concepts to validate performance of the air-breathing propulsion for long range fires; optimizes and matures models to simulate integrated objective system performance; matures seeker/sensor integration for optimal performance and precision; improves survivability by exploiting intel based red-force models and analysis; develops a novel warhead for increased lethality for Precision Strike Missile
