BBG(X) Power & Propulsion Risk Mitigation & Demonstration

FY2027 Request
$251.0M
◆ New start in FY2027
HitchAI read

This activity requests $251.0M in FY2027, 100% of project 2486 — a new start with no prior-year and no current-year money. The R-2A exhibit describes it across FY2027, including what the FY2027 money is planned to buy.

New start

This activity requests $251.0M in FY2027 with no prior-year and no current-year funding. There is no incumbent line to compare it with — it did not exist before this President's Budget.

What the FY2027 request buys

Verbatim from the R-2A exhibit for project 2486 of PE 0603573N. This is the budget justification's own description of work that has not happened yet — the one thing no other level of the budget carries.

FY2027 planned work

Continue BBG(X) power and propulsion risk reduction activities for land-based testing of propulsion systems in a realistic environment aligned with the BBG(X) IPS design efforts as part of BBG(X) Design Development efforts executed under PE 0603564N/ PU 0413. BBG(X) Power and Propulsion System Strategy completes design, test, integration, and acquisition activities resulting in a tactical power and propulsion system design that completes full scale testing, and resolves all exposed design flaws, prior to system activation during the ship construction phase. Specifically: - Phase 1 (IPS M&S): Continue risk reduction activities for the BBG(X) IPS by utilizing ship power systems simulation to support equipment and interface specification refinement. Conduct real-time integrated system modeling (including controls) assessing power & propulsion system performance. Provide BBG(X) IPS design performance feedback to the ship design (PE 0603564N / PU 0413) as part of preliminary design and refinement of the power and propulsion system design and specification. Continue to demonstrate interfaces for energy storage and advanced controls capabilities that are required to support future mission system capabilities such as directed energy weapons and advanced sensors. - Phase 2 (Land based testing): Finalize the test site modifications and construction for incorporation of BBG(X) IPS hardware. Continue testing and analysis of the prototypical architecture design. Procurement of tactical equipment for the Land Based Engineering Site, e.g. motor, generators, etc. Continue refinement of interfaces and controls of the power and propulsion system. The Land Based Testing Strategy includes both Prototype Testing and development of a Full-Scale Land Based Engineering Site. Prototype and/or Engineering Development Model testing supports engineering decision making, acquisition selections of system and component vendors, and risk reduction. The testing is distributed across Gibbs & Cox, Vendor Facilities, and University Affiliated Research Centers. The Full-Scale Land Based Engineering Site at NSWC Philadelphia Division will demonstrate full scale tactical performance, support shipboard issue resolution, and support training of shipyard and US Navy operators.

FY2026 to FY2027 change

FY 2026 to FY 2027 increased in the amount of $251.008M due to the transition of FY 2026 DDG(X) PE 0603573N / PU 2471 efforts to FY 2027 BBG(X), PE 0603573N / PU 2486, in order to meet the planned award of the lead BBG(X) in FY 2028 with delivery in FY 2036.

Money

Three years, and no five-year plan

An R-2A activity publishes the prior year, the current year and the budget year. The FYDP outyears exist at project and program-element level and are deliberately absent here rather than inferred. Estimate types are colored and never summed into one figure.

This activity is 100% of project 2486's FY2027 request and 93% of PE 0603573N's. In the request year the activities under a project sum to it exactly; in the current year they under-cover it in about 9% of cases, so an activity's delta can legitimately exceed its parent's and the two must not be compared row to row.
