What the FY2027 request buys

Verbatim from the R-2A exhibit for project 1662 of PE 0204136N. This is the budget justification's own description of work that has not happened yet — the one thing no other level of the budget carries.

FY2027 planned work

Continue development, integration and qualification of the LITENING Artemis Targeting Pod Type 179 Laser. Planned activities include execution of a Critical Design Review (CDR) and updates to software, firmware and system design resulting from that review. Funding will also support procurement of mass mock-up hardware to support laser fit checks, qualification and design verification efforts. Funding will support procurement of hardware to complete a total quantity of 3 lasers for integration and qualification testing into the Artemis Pod(s). FY27 funding to continue development, integration and test of Advanced Tactical Data Fusion System (ATDFS). Phase 1 development will incorporate a new algorithm replacing and modernizing MSR. Phase 2 of ATDFS will continue development for an MSI air to air sensor and source data replacement.

FY2026 to FY2027 change

FY2026 to FY2027 increase of $5.914M due to increased Artemis efforts for software development in support of the new algorithm.

Before the request year

FY2026: the year under way

Prior-year accomplishments and current-year plans from the same exhibit. Context for the FY2027 plan, not a series — an activity partitions its project exactly in the request year, but can under-cover it in earlier years.

FY2026 plans — current year

Continue development, integration and test of Advanced Tactical Data Fusion System (ATDFS). Phase 1 development will incorporate a new algorithm replacing and modernizing MSR. Phase 2 of ATDFS will continue development for an MSI air to air sensor and source data replacement.

Three years, and no five-year plan

An R-2A activity publishes the prior year, the current year and the budget year. The FYDP outyears exist at project and program-element level and are deliberately absent here rather than inferred. Estimate types are colored and never summed into one figure.

This activity is 23% of project 1662's FY2027 request and 22% of PE 0204136N's. In the request year the activities under a project sum to it exactly; in the current year they under-cover it in about 9% of cases, so an activity's delta can legitimately exceed its parent's and the two must not be compared row to row.
