WS3 Vault Modernization
The Weapon Storage and Security System (WS3) is a US maintained/operated system of systems that supports the nuclear mission by providing the capability to securely and safely store resources deployed in Europe. The Vault Modernization Program (VMP) ensures National Security Directive 42 (NSD-42) compliance and addresses system obsolescence issues. Detailed information is classified and can be provided. Funding is required for VMP to deliver an NSD-42 compliant encryption system necessary to secure forward deployed nuclear weapons in Europe in time to meet the required need date. A non-compliance will result in the need for US and NATO partner nations to post unplanned and unfunded security forces continuously until a compliant encryption system is delivered and installed. Detailed information is classified and can be provided. This program element included all necessary expenses required to manage, execute, and deliver weapon system capability. The use of such program funds would be in addition to the civilian pay expenses budgeted in program elements 0605829F, 0605831F, 0605833F, and 0605898F. This program is in Budget Activity 7, Operational System Development because this budget activity includes development efforts to upgrade systems that have been fielded or have received approval for full rate production and anticipate production funding in the current or subsequent fiscal year.
"Continue to incrementally fund the second task order for maturing the detailed specifications and design of the impacted vault subsystems. This effort encompasses adjudication of NSA encryption requirements. Additional detailed information is classified and can be provided at higher classification levels."
