What the FY2027 request buys

- Initiate development of biological, bio-inspired, or bio-hybrid platforms that enhance the detection, characterization, and protection against emerging threats, both in warfighters and agricultural crops. - Investigate cellular engineering approaches that maintain physiology and viability and do not result in immunotoxicity. - Investigate new methods for identifying and characterizing warfighter physiology and generating datasets to train computational tools such as large language models. - Initiate development of high-throughput models, tools, and methods to rapidly assess biological, bio-inspired, or bio-hybrid molecules relevant to DoW challenges. - Investigate safe and responsible modification of biological materials and molecules to enhance warfighter preparation and recovery in austere environments and in the event of pathogenic exposures. - Initiate maturation of select robotics platforms capable of identifying, accessing, and treating injured warfighters. - Create predictive mental health monitoring systems through durable biomarker patches with machine learning for early intervention capabilities and diagnostic predictions. - Generate technology capable of producing hemi-sleep in humans.
The FY 2027 increase reflects studies and concepts initiations including, but not limited to, applied research in biological, bio-inspired, or bio-hybrid platforms to protect against emerging threats, and in medical care technologies that will support the warfighter.
