The Future Generation Wireless Technologies program accelerates the development, integration, and testing of 6G technologies to ensure Department of War (DoW) dominance in future operating environments. This program bridges the gap between advanced research and operational deployment by rapidly maturing and integrating commercially driven 6G advancements into military systems and concepts of operation. The program will focus on key technologies such as AI-enabled Radio Access Networks (AI RAN), Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC), multi-access edge computing in Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) platforms, and native spectrum sharing. The program will enable secure, resilient, and interoperable communications; improved sensing capabilities; and AI-driven resource optimization for enhanced warfighting capabilities in contested and denied environments in the combatant command areas of responsibility with emphasis on INDOPACOM.

FY2027 planned work Develop and demonstrate an AI-defined/designed Mobile Edge Computing Prototype: This effort will explore the use of AI/ML to overcome the wide range of operating conditions in an expeditionary environment. When paired with radio hardware that maximizes the degrees of freedom available to the software, this approach transforms a previously overwhelming parameter space into an operational advantage for information access, performance, resilience, stealth, and interoperability. Expand development of warfighter targeting and surveillance from standard smartphone devices connected from aerial or orbit directly to other sensor platforms to speed detection to shooter notification time and deliver…

FY2026 to FY2027 change Increase of $5.000 million from FY 2026 to FY 2027 as a result of a planned transition of funding from Budget Activity (BA) 4 PE 0604011D8Z project 724 in order to create a new program element in BA 3 for Applied Research, Future Generation Wireless Technologies.
