SMOKE/OBSCURANT SYSTEM
Screening Obscuration Module (SOM) is a rapidly deployable modular system that can disrupt electromagnetic sensors used for identification and targeting. SOM can be deployed on multiple platforms ranging from fielded platforms to future unmanned robotic platforms. The SOM strategy includes an incremental approach: SOM-Visual (SOM-V, increment one), SOM-Bispectral (SOM-B, increment two), and SOM-Multispectral (SOM-M, increment three). SOM-M covers the full spectrum of visual through millimeter wave screening obscuration; covering all three incremental capabilities. SOM benefits the warfighter by disrupting adversaries targeting systems and improving soldier and platform survivability. The SOM-M program will utilize FY 2027 RDTE to award a contract and initiate a preliminary design in order to develop prototypes and initiate risk reduction testing.
FY2027 planned work Initiate maturation and implementation of multispectral screening technology into one dissemination box and down selection of screening materiel's. Risk reduction testing and conducing a preliminary design review will support Milestone B decision and entry into Engineering and Manufacturing Development (EMD) phase.
FY2026 to FY2027 change FY 2027 funding increase supports initiation of SOM Multispectral (SOM-M) development, increment three of the existing SOM CDD.
