Product Development

Advanced Engine Development (AED) activities include all efforts necessary to mature and validate transition readiness of advanced propulsion system architectures, designs, enabling advanced materials, component technologies, and manufacturing processes in realistic environments across all thrust classes of propulsion. Validated materials, architectures, designs, and manufacturing processes and techniques may advance for follow-on Engineering, Manufacturing and Development (EMD) and platform integration. Materials and component technologies may advance for insertion into fielded engines and or engines in production. AED also includes all efforts to define and evaluate modifications to commercial and military off-the-shelf propulsion systems for use in existing and future, aircraft and munitions.

Mission & acquisition strategy

The Advanced Engine Development (AED) Program includes all efforts necessary to develop and evaluate advanced propulsion system components and prototypes in realistic environments. The program also includes all efforts to define and evaluate required modifications to commercial and military off-the-shelf propulsion systems for use in existing and future aircraft and munitions. These activities enable maturation and risk reduction of advanced propulsion system architectures, designs, modifications, enabling materials and technologies, and manufacturing processes for follow-on Engineering, Manufacturing and Development (EMD) and platform integration efforts within this program.

Leverage the contractual scope, available contract ceiling and schedule efficiencies of existing Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) based contracts, Other Transactional Authority (OTA) agreements, and Broad Agency Announcements. The government agency responsible for managing this program is the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, Propulsion Directorate, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio.
