What project FA5 buys

The Assured Precision Weapons and Munitions (APWM) - FA5 Project is focused on advanced risk mitigation, technology integration, expedited prototyping, and product support to rapidly identify, evaluate, mature, test, and demonstrate various assured precision related prototype technologies in munitions and munition resilient support and survivability components and subsystems within a complex environment with the overarching goal of solving tough operational problems and addressing critical capability gaps. The APWM project reinforces the Secretary of War's Acquisition Transformation Strategy, and the Army Transformation Initiative (ATI) major lines of effort through fast technology development and prototyping, which increases lethality and ensures future combat overmatch success of the Joint force against peer/near-peer adversaries and the China pacing threat. This project also aims to improve performance and affordability of Army and Joint capability portfolios via Joint Lethality (JL) Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT), Navigation Warfare (NavWar), and Army M-code Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinated efforts and integration of innovative industry contributions. The APWM project directly supports the top Army and Joint force modernization priorities in support of the NDS and multiple Public Law (PL) related congressional imperatives. Funding will support engagement by munition PNT and NavWar related Lethality experts in the development, evaluation, and technology delivery activities of the M-code GPS as well as the Army's continuous adaptation of PNT, NavWar, and Electronic Warfare (EW) enabled capabilities to achieve accurate extended range and hypersonic lethality, increase warfighter survivability, maximizing precision munition stowed kills, and countering Anti-Access/Area Denial (A2/AD) threats. The APWM project enables component and subsystem architecture input essential for precision munitions and other such lethality delivery mechanisms operating in a complex EW threat environments, M-code GPS and technology integration and evaluation (including verifying and validating this capability for future Joint precision munitions), and maturation of alternative PNT and EW/NavWar related technologies, components, payloads, and solutions.
