SSN(X) will be designed to enter, fight, and deny within heavily defended adversary bastions from the sea to the seabed. SSN(X) will deliver increased warfighting performance through larger payload volume, improved lethality and survivability, and organic hosting of Robotic and Autonomous Systems (RAS). These capabilities assure access to threat-denied areas, deny adversary safe havens, and ensure flexibility. This project encompasses Navy RDT&E efforts required to design the next SSN.

Mission & acquisition strategy

The National Defense Strategy (NDS) requires the United States to have the most lethal and capable military in the world. The U.S. Navy must meet the rising challenge by delivering a new attack submarine to maintain superiority in the undersea domain. SSN(X) will significantly contribute to rebuilding our military, reinforcing deterrence in the undersea, and building lethality in the Joint Force. It will provide enhanced lethality, survivability, speed and operational availability to maintain undersea supremacy against growing threats. SSN(X) will conduct full spectrum undersea warfare and employ and coordinate with Robotic and Autonomous Systems (RAS) and sensors as a force multiplier.

The formal acquisition strategy for SSN(X) will be drafted post Milestone A. Preliminary Design for SSN(X) will be accomplished through a collaborative Navy-Industry effort to maximize the benefits of competition between the potential shipbuilders.
