Mission & acquisition strategy

The Secretary of War (SecWar) designated the Secretary of the Army (SA) as the Department of War's (DoW) Executive Agent (EA) for Counter-small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-sUAS). The EA is tasked with leading, directing, and synchronizing DoW efforts to counter small Unmanned Aircraft System (sUAS) threats while minimizing unnecessary duplication and redundancy. The C-sUAS System Development and Demonstration efforts are in response to DoW Joint Requirements Oversight Council Memorandums (JROC-M) requirements for identification, development, testing, evaluation, and integration of technologies to defeat sUAS threats across the DoW.

In August 2025, the SECWAR established the Joint Interagency Task Force 401 (JIATF 401) as the Department of War (DoW) lead organization to counter small Unmanned Aerial Systems (C-sUAS). JIATF 401 synchronizes C-UAS efforts across the DoW to rapidly deliver joint capabilities at scale to defend the homeland, protect US and allied forces, defend critical infrastructure, and assist federal agencies. The task force has a global focus and is a multifaceted organization leading DoW C-sUAS activities at the nexus of OSW, the Joint Staff, Combatant Commands, and the Services. The JIATF 401 is innovative, scalable, and threat adaptive.

The Counter-small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-sUAS) Joint New Capabilities effort develops new technologies and materiel solutions to enable the military services and joint force to counter Groups 1-3 sUAS threats.
