Mission & acquisition strategy

This program continues funding for Space Data Network (SDN) in support of United States Space Force (USSF) Space Based Interceptors (SBI), the effort to develop a space-based weapon system to counter-Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM) and Counter-hypersonic glide vehicles (HGV). The Long-Range Kill Chains PE contains activities for the Space Data Network-Space Link (SDN-SL) program. This program leverages the United States Space Force (USSF) multi-vendor Space Data Network - Backbone (SDN-B) program to enhance an integrated constellation to provide the communication layer for the Space Based Interceptors (SBI). This project is incorrectly labeled "Space Based Interceptor".

For FY27, and in coordination with Army, Air Force, USNORTHCOM, and USSPACECOM, this funding will support the adoption of a commercially derived Radio Frequency (RF) payload and prototypes for integration onto multiple planes of space vehicles, and launch of the space vehicles.

Project detail

What project 671113 buys

The Auxiliary Payloads project provides the additional communication relay space vehicles required to increase system access and capacity to the levels required to enable warfighters with the capability to rapidly move target data around the globe and execute long range kill chains. To ensure this system can transmit data to the secure cloud environment within operationally relevant timelines and enable persistent capability to directly downlink data to warfighters and weapon systems, capacity needs to be added to the network through the addition of more relay vehicles. The Department of the Air Force will leverage its existing relationship with the partnered agencies to rapidly acquire the necessary capability to meet warfighter needs. Activities may include, but are not limited to program office support, studies, technical analysis, experimentation, prototyping, and activities that may leverage commercial and international opportunities.
