What the FY2027 request buys

Verbatim from the R-2A exhibit for project 2223 of PE 0603640M. This is the budget justification's own description of work that has not happened yet — the one thing no other level of the budget carries.

FY2027 planned work

Continue: - Advanced development of integrated technologies for low-cost, extended range, precision guided munitions which will improve lethality and special effects payloads against various types of stationary and moving targets on land and water, as well as in satellite and network denied environments. - Development of extended range, area effects munitions that combine state of the art seeker and warhead technology while reducing required munition salvo sizes. Complete: - Research to support additional live fire demonstrations and updating fusing for Global Positioning System (GPS) degraded environments. - Research effort that leverages prior USN/USMC investments to develop and demonstrate development of tactical-scale hypersonic missile proving timely fires at extended ranges. Initiate: - Technology demonstration effort for a validated universal architecture that optimized optimizes the operational value of digital signal processors at the tactical edge.

FY2026 to FY2027 change

The increase in funding from FY 2026 to FY 2027 is due to the initiation of an effort to demonstrate and validate a universal architecture that optimized the operational value of digital signal processors at the tactical edge.

Before the request year

FY2026: the year under way

Prior-year accomplishments and current-year plans from the same exhibit. Context for the FY2027 plan, not a series — an activity partitions its project exactly in the request year, but can under-cover it in earlier years.

FY2026 plans — current year

- Continue advanced development of integrated technologies for low-cost, extended range, precision guided munitions which will improve lethality and special effects payloads against various types of stationary and moving targets on land and water, as well as in satellite and network denied environments. - Continue research to support additional live fire demonstrations and updating fusing for Global Positioning System (GPS) degraded environments. - Initiate development of extended range, area effects munitions that combine state of the art seeker and warhead technology while reducing required munition salvo sizes. - Initiate effort that leverages prior USN/USMC investments to develop and demonstrate development of tactical-scale hypersonic missile proving timely fires at extended ranges.

Three years, and no five-year plan

An R-2A activity publishes the prior year, the current year and the budget year. The FYDP outyears exist at project and program-element level and are deliberately absent here rather than inferred. Estimate types are colored and never summed into one figure.

This activity is 12% of project 2223's FY2027 request and 4.7% of PE 0603640M's. In the request year the activities under a project sum to it exactly; in the current year they under-cover it in about 9% of cases, so an activity's delta can legitimately exceed its parent's and the two must not be compared row to row.
