What the FY2027 request buys
Verbatim from the R-2A exhibit for project 2223 of PE 0603640M. This is the budget justification's own description of work that has not happened yet — the one thing no other level of the budget carries.
Continue: - Develop advanced intelligent mobility technologies for ground and amphibious platforms to improve mobility and maneuverability across littoral and inland terrain. Demonstration platforms will continue to be utilized to assess potential future capabilities. - Develop unmanned swarming ground and amphibious platforms and formations with enhanced autonomy capabilities and utilization and demonstration of advanced payloads for future operations. Conduct experimentation to understand feasibility and utility for military applications. - Development of advanced drivetrain technologies, system designs, and platforms to assess capability of future military tactical truck systems to improve fuel efficiency, extend range, reduce greenhouse gases, and provide onboard auxiliary power and energy. - Research effort to conduct a series of operational analysis and experiments to rapidly advance technologies in select focus areas related to littoral maneuver into the hands of Marines to evaluate military utility. - Integrate field testing of AI-enabled autonomy Command and Control. - Conduct research on new small unmanned aerial systems capable of maneuvering and directly supporting maneuvering ground forces.
The increase in funding from FY 2026 to FY 2027 is due to increased investments in research to (1) Develop advanced intelligent mobility technologies for amphibious platforms to improve mobility and maneuverability across littoral and inland terrain, (2) integrate field testing of AI-enabled autonomy Command and Control and (3) conduct research on new small unmanned aerial systems capable of maneuvering and directly supporting maneuvering ground forces.
FY2026: the year under way
Prior-year accomplishments and current-year plans from the same exhibit. Context for the FY2027 plan, not a series — an activity partitions its project exactly in the request year, but can under-cover it in earlier years.
- Continue development of advanced intelligent mobility technologies for ground and amphibious platforms to improve mobility and maneuverability across littoral and inland terrain. Demonstration platforms will continue to be utilized to assess potential future capabilities. - Continue to expand on efforts related to the development of unmanned swarming ground and amphibious platforms and formations with enhanced autonomy capabilities and utilization and demonstration of advanced payloads for future operations. Conduct experimentation to understand feasibility and utility for military applications. - Continue the development of advanced drivetrain technologies, system designs, and platforms to assess capability of future military tactical truck systems to improve fuel efficiency, extend range, reduce greenhouse gases, and provide onboard auxiliary power and energy. - Continue research effort to conduct a series of operational analysis and experiments to rapidly advance technologies in select focus areas related to littoral maneuver into the hands of Marines to evaluate military utility. - Continue the integration and field testing of AI-enabled autonomy Command and Control - Continue research into new small unmanned aerial systems capable of maneuvering and directly supporting maneuvering ground forces. - Complete research info a high reliability and high efficiency electronic architecture for small, expeditionary unmanned vessels to meet extended endurance goals with limited maintenance demands.
Three years, and no five-year plan
An R-2A activity publishes the prior year, the current year and the budget year. The FYDP outyears exist at project and program-element level and are deliberately absent here rather than inferred. Estimate types are colored and never summed into one figure.
| Fiscal Year | Estimate Type | Amount ($M) |
|---|---|---|
| FY2025 | Actual | 9.3 |
| FY2026 | Enacted | 6.3 |
| FY2027 | Request | 11.7 |
This activity is 10% of project 2223's FY2027 request and 4.1% of PE 0603640M's. In the request year the activities under a project sum to it exactly; in the current year they under-cover it in about 9% of cases, so an activity's delta can legitimately exceed its parent's and the two must not be compared row to row.
