What the FY2027 request buys

Verbatim from the R-2A exhibit for project AX3 of PE 0604115A. This is the budget justification's own description of work that has not happened yet — the one thing no other level of the budget carries.

FY2027 planned work

Continue to prototype individual Soldier weapons, provide Soldiers with enhanced capabilities, and increase their protection and ability to respond to emerging situations through prototyping and maturation of advanced technologies. Plans include the continued development and maturation of an integrated Advanced Digital Control System (ADCS) to allow integration of a variety of generators, loads and energy storage systems to enable the Joint Force, coalition operations, and integration of energy storage. Developing and integration of a prototype Nuclear, Biological, Chemical reconnaissance senor with a 4x faster acquisition time. Will also continue the development of the Operational Single Cell for Accessory Readiness batteries for soldier enabling devices as well as an extreme low temperature variant of the BB-2590 battery. Will develop and prototype blast gauges and data eco system to ensure blast over pressure is captured appropriately in training and operations.

FY2026 to FY2027 change

Funds were increased to support the expanded scope of prototyping efforts, including the additional development of blast gauges and its associated data eco system.

Before the request year

FY2026: the year under way

Prior-year accomplishments and current-year plans from the same exhibit. Context for the FY2027 plan, not a series — an activity partitions its project exactly in the request year, but can under-cover it in earlier years.

Three years, and no five-year plan

An R-2A activity publishes the prior year, the current year and the budget year. The FYDP outyears exist at project and program-element level and are deliberately absent here rather than inferred. Estimate types are colored and never summed into one figure.

This activity is 9.1% of project AX3's FY2027 request and 9.1% of PE 0604115A's. In the request year the activities under a project sum to it exactly; in the current year they under-cover it in about 9% of cases, so an activity's delta can legitimately exceed its parent's and the two must not be compared row to row.
