Air and Missile Defense Radar
The Air and Missile Defense Radar (AMDR) program consists of the AN/SPY-6(V) Family Of Radars (FoR): - AN/SPY-6(V)1 (DDG 51 Flight III destroyer) - AN/SPY-6(V)2 (Nimitz Aircraft Carrier (CVN), America Amphibious Assault Ship (LHA), San Antonio Landing Platform Dock (LPD)) - AN/SPY-6(V)3 (Ford CVN) - AN/SPY-6(V)4 (DDG 51 Flight IIA destroyer backfit) AN/SPY-6(V)1 provides multi-mission capabilities, supporting long range ballistic missile detection, tracking and discrimination, plus Area and Self Defense against air/surface threats. For Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD), increased sensitivity and bandwidth detect advanced threats at required ranges, concurrent with Area and Self Defense. For Area Air Defense, enhanced clutter capabilities are required to detect Very Low Observable/Very Low Flyer (VLO/VLF) threats in heavy clutter. This active phased array radar addresses evolving threats. The SPY-6 FoR obtains performance enhancements through modular hardware (HW)/software (SW), scalable design and Open Architecture (OA). AN/SPY-6(V)2/3 (Enterprise Air Surveillance Radar (EASR)) provide multi-mission capabilities supporting Air Traffic Control (ATC), situational awareness, and ship self-defense against Air and Surface threats. Enhanced clutter capability, short-range detection/tracking, and weather waveforms are needed. SPY-6(V)3 is primary air surveillance for Ford CVNs supporting self-defense, awareness and ATC. SPY-6(V)2 provides primary radar for other ships with ancillary ATC support. AN/SPY-6(V)4 provides Active Electronically-Scanned Array (AESA) and digital beamforming for Flight IIA backfit. Includes non-recurring engineering to scale HW/SW, modeling/simulation to update Concept of Operations (CONOPS), and enable Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) capabilities on FLT IIA DDGs. Enhancements include Advanced Distributed Radar (ADR), High Efficiency High Powered Amplifier (HPA), Agnostic Signal Processing for Increased Radar Efficiency (ASPIRE) HW development, second-source Radio Frequency (RF) Head, and Modeling and Simulation (M&S) supporting test beds, pivoting from SW to HW upgrades in FY25. ADR includes SW enhancements enabling multi-ship cooperative operations for Distributed Maritime Operations (DMO).
