System Delta 831 is developing the Global Positioning System (GPS) for Guardians across Position, Navigation, and Timing. As a result, the Service will improve readiness and operational reach of existing force structure. The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a space based Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) distribution system which operates through all weather. GPS supports both civil and military users in air, space, sea and land operations. GPS is a satellite-based radio navigation system that serves military and civil users worldwide. GPS users process satellite signals to determine accurate position, velocity and time. GPS must comply with Title 10 United States Code (USC) Sec 2281 which requires that the Secretary of War (SECWAR) ensures the continued sustainment and operation of GPS for military and civilian purposes, and 51 USC Sec 50112, which requires that GPS complies with certain standards and facilitates international cooperation. GPS also includes the Nuclear Detonation (NUDET) Detection System (NDS). The Government is responsible for the integration of the GPS Segments such that they provide worldwide GPS capability to support the warfighter and over four billion national security, civil, Allied, and commercial GPS users. The Department of War's Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) Next Generation Architecture Program is a multi-domain, multi-echelon enterprise initiative to design, develop, field, and sustain a resilient, assured, and layered PNT capability. The PNT enterprise carries three primary tasks: providing and protecting the effective use of military GPS and other PNT services by U.S. and allied forces globally; preventing the effective use of PNT services by adversaries in areas of military operations; and preserving civil GPS services to non-combatants outside areas of military operations. The GPS Generation 4 (Gen4) program prioritizes modernizing the existing GPS constellation as the foundational layer of the PNT architecture. Key program actions include developing and productizing promising technology for use in future systems, as well as policy actions to identify mission-specific PNT needs and prepare warfighters for challenging environments. This includes the accelerated fielding of Military Code (M-Code) encrypted GPS receivers across ground, aviation, and munitions domains.
